Maker versus taker on OKX: reading your order's role before you press send
Two traders can place almost identical orders on OKX and be charged differently, simply because one order waited in the book and the other matched immediately. That is the difference between maker and taker. The idea is easy once you see it, and it helps you control costs without trading less. This guide explains each role, shows how a limit order can end up as a taker by accident and tells you where to check what you were actually charged, without quoting figures that would soon be out of date.
Resting or matching
A maker order sits in the order book until someone else trades against it, which adds liquidity. A taker order matches at once with orders already there, which removes liquidity. Market orders are almost always takers. A limit order is a maker only if its price does not cross the best price on the opposite side at the moment it is placed.
How a limit order becomes a taker
If you enter a buy limit at or above the best sell price, it will fill straight away and count as a taker, even though you used a limit order. To rest on the book, your price has to sit on your own side. Many platforms offer a post-only option that cancels such an order instead of letting it take liquidity; read the OKX help centre to see how it is called in your version and whether it is available to you. Many traders find this check alone changes how they place orders.
Verify the official information
Fee rules depend on product and account level and change over time, so the right source is the official OKX fee page, not a table copied elsewhere. Describe the rule in your own words and note the date of your reading. After trading, compare the fee shown on each fill in your history with that note.
Cost is not the only goal
Saving a little in fees is pointless if the maker order never fills and you miss the trade you wanted. Choose the order type according to your goal and your timing, then check the result. Keep a short log of role, fee and date for a few trades, and you will see what your habits really cost. Review the log every few weeks and adjust your habits only if the numbers justify it.
